There's a new 'house porn' series out called Love it or List it Vancouver.
Now my first expectation was for offensive realtors pumping outrageous Vancouver properties. The show was hyped as one that would:
... feature families in the city struggling with homes that no longer suit their needs. Interior designer Jill Harris will "compete" against realtor Todd Talbot to convince people to stay in the Vancouver-area home she remodels for them, rather than "listing" and moving to a new home found by Talbot.
Having watched two episodes, there's no doubt it's offensive. But not because of the realtor/interior designer hosts.
What's offensive is the featured couples.
If the rest of Canada doesn't view us a stuck up, petulant, myopic and self-centered already, this show will fix that promptly.
House Porn?
Hardly.
It would almost make you feel empathy for realtor's because they have to deal with the type of families profiled in this show.

I have not watched an episode yet, but do "know" the guy who 'plays" the realtor, I says "plays" as he is a small time actor who lives in Lions Bay.
ReplyDeletePrior to this show he was NOT a realtor, once he got this part, he then had to take his real estate liscence to do the show !!!
He has NO real estate experience whatsoever !!!
I watched this show and it certainly made me upchuck a little in my mouth. Unlike the one in Toronto, most homes the Realtor Todd showed the buyers could not be filmed because I'm guessing they were too disgusting to show on national TV. I think this show has violated something holy, although I'm not sure what. Both the hosts are fake plastic people, the homeowners are angry caged animals, and the houses are ill constructed moldy storage lockers with windows that costs millions.
ReplyDeleteSecond harbinger of a market top, first one was Housewives of Vancouver now this.
ReplyDeleteJillian Harris of Bachelorette fame and a fake RE agent? Yep, that's got Vancouver written all over it.
ReplyDeleteAwful acting aside - I don't mind Love it or List It, so I thought I'd give the Vancouver edition a go (fully aware of the realtor, who is only just a realtor - if you look his name up on the Real Estate Council website, you'll see that he only acquired his license in September 2012, and that the designer is a former popularity contest participant). Boy is it awful. I thought that the naffly scripted closing scenes that Hillary and David in the eastern version could not be toppled, but it look the Vancouver edition.
ReplyDeleteAgreed that the homeowners, presenters, and just about everything in that show paint Vancouver in the worst possible light. All it needs is an endorsement form Lululemon every commercial break.
